Rest in Thee

It’s Friday night and I am finishing a week of posts about how we can only find lasting fulfillment in Christ.  It seems fitting that I end with one of  my favorite quotes from early church father St. Augustine of Hippo.  Augustine lived in the third century after Jesus, and was a theologian and philosopher.  I like the fact that he was a deep thinker and he wrote many profound things about relating to God.  Here is my favorite:

Sometimes translated, “Thou hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee.”

I love this quote, and it is exactly what I have been trying to say.

Outside of Christ we are tapping empty cisterns.

Outside of Christ our identities are uncertain.

Outside of Christ we are trapped in perfectionism.

Outside of Christ we are never at rest.

In Christ we have life, and rest, and peace.

“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace” Romans 8:5-6.

Lord, my prayer is that daily You remind me of how empty I am without you.  That you continue to create a thirst in my only for you, and that I turn to you to satisfy that thirst in my time of need.
