God’s Spirit: It has long been clear to me that mankind is so much more than the world might have us believe. We are created with a spirit that images God (Genesis 1:26), and in fact, if we follow Jesus Christ we have His Spirit living within us (2 Timothy 1:14). This fact is never more real to me than
1. Occasions like last night when 600 men, women, and children came together to worship on a weekday evening and God’s Spirit was present, moving, and glorified… and
2. Encounters like I had today. I was working with an 87-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s who can’t remember my name, where she is, her mother’s name, what I’ve just asked her to do, and who can’t carry on an intelligent conversation about any topic. This lady has declared to me on several occasions, however, that “I am a Christian.” So today when she said those words I asked her to pray for me. As soon as I asked, her eyes lit up, she grabbed my hand and began to pray fluently and thoughtfully for the exact needs I was experiencing. She prayed for some time, and finished with joy, telling me she loved me.
So how do you like that? No coincidence. I wish I could have recorded it. That was the Spirit of God living in her! She is sealed. She is His.
I’ve seen this many times in people with dementia, mental disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, etc. leading me to be FULLY CONVINCED that “He is able to guard what we entrust to Him” (our very lives – 2 Timothy 1:12). His Spirit lives within us. He will never leave us or forsake us (Hebrews 13:5), not even in our weakest times. His Spirit transcends our failing minds, and our failing bodies, and brings us safely home. ❤
